In August, the number of new businesses in Spain increased by 5.7% compared to the same month in 2025, totaling 7,526 establishments, the highest figure for August since 2007. This growth marks the third consecutive month of increases in business formations, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE).
Business Formation Trends
The latest data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) reveals a significant increase in the formation of new businesses in Spain. In August, there was a 5.7% rise in new company registrations compared to August 2025, reaching a total of 7,526 companies. This figure is the highest recorded for any August since 2007, indicating a positive trend in entrepreneurship.
This increase follows previous monthly gains of 1.7% in June and 2.2% in July, suggesting a sustained upward momentum in new business formations. Furthermore, the capital subscribed for these new businesses surged by 92.8% year-on-year, amounting to €456.4 million, with an average capital of €60,644, which is up 82.3% compared to the previous year.
Business Closures
Despite the rise in new formations, the number of business dissolutions also increased. In August, 1,315 companies closed, representing a 2.8% increase from August 2025. Most of these closures were voluntary, with 1,079 businesses dissolving for that reason. The sectors most affected included commerce and real estate, financial, and insurance activities, which accounted for a significant portion of both new formations and closures.
Regional Variations
Regionally, 14 autonomous communities reported more new business registrations than in the previous year. The most notable increases occurred in Cantabria (+68%), Asturias (+46.8%), and Murcia (+34.5%). Conversely, regions including Navarra, the Balearic Islands, and Catalonia saw declines in new business formations during the same period.
Overall, the first eight months of the year have shown an 8.5% increase in company formations, while dissolutions rose by 6.8%. These figures reflect both the challenges and opportunities present in the current economic landscape, highlighting a complex environment for entrepreneurs in Spain.
